More professionals are offering specialties to attract gay clients and serve non-traditional families.
Accounting firm Marcum LLP, which has offices in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Miami, recently formed a practice group to address the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals as well as non-traditional families.
Janis Cowhey McDonagh, a partner with Marcum, said the specialty is not about marketing but about the needs of clients. She said gay individuals and non-traditional families in Florida have a greater challenge when it comes to estate planning and tax issues. The state bans same-sex marriages and doesn’t recognize domestic partnerships.
“It’s not just about same-sex couples. People aren’t getting married like they used to. They come in and say, ‘I want to go over my business’ and we find out they’re in a long-term relationship,” McDonagh said.
