Excerpt:

While you spend your weekends enjoying the summer sun, your accountant may be slaving over your business’ taxes.

The stereotypical image places accountants handcuffed to their desks during the weeks leading up to the April 15 federal tax deadline. Business owners know they are expected to submit their taxes by the March 15 deadline – but that deadline seems more like a guideline. Extension applications, which stretch to September, flood accounting firms every spring. What is perceived as an industry characterized by accountants pulling caffeine-fueled all-nighters during a few months of the year may prove to be a fallacy. Firms catering to businesses manage tax returns into the fall.

“It’s very hard (for businesses) to do everything by the original due date,” said Carolyn Mazzenga, partner in charge of Marcum’s Melville office. While extensions will lessen the workload during the already manic deadline season, she said the consequence is having a busier summer.

“(Our firm) doesn’t use outsiders or seasonal people; we will use people that have been with us for a very long time,” Mazzenga said. “It works out really well. It gives new parents flexibility.”
