Friedman was also part of the push for brands to go from wholesale to retail, not only manufacturing their own apparel but selling it in their own stores. This was in response to pressure from big department stores like Macy's and Bloomingdale's, which basically rented out space to clothing brands and demanded a big cut of the sales price.
