Reminder to Taxpayers to Beware of Scams!

The Marcum Tax Advisors, in a recent web posting, “Beware of Phone Scams,” warned taxpayers that there are many individuals in the U.S. posing as IRS agents who are strong arming innocent people to pay taxes under threat of jail time. Scared individuals are paying these sophisticated scam artists millions of dollars.

Now that we are in the midst of tax season, Marcum LLP would like to remind all readers to beware of callers demanding taxes and threatening arrest or revocation of licenses. Most scammers are asking for payments using gift cards. In the recent Washington Post article “IRS Watchdog Warns of ‘Largest Scam of its Kind’ with Agency Impersonators,” the IRS has confirmed these schemes and has issued warnings to taxpayers.

Remember, the IRS does not want payments on gift cards and will not call and threaten arrest. Should you get such a call, please contact the local authorities or contact your tax advisor to confirm before you make any payments.
